January 13, 2008- George X. Mechir, 89, President of Mentor Bank.


George X. Mechir, who died Dec. 21 at age 89, retired in 1994 after 10 years as president and chief executive of Great Lakes Commerce Bank of Mentor.


At the time of his death, he was on the board of directors of Lake National Bank in Mentor. He served on the Lake County Economic Development Council and Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board.


The 1935 Cathedral Latin School alumnus graduated from Ohio State University's colleges of commerce and law.


During World War II, Mechir served as an intelligence officer with the Army's 106th Infantry Division. He participated in the southern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns.

Mechir left the military with the rank of major and the Bronze Star Medal.


He began practicing law in Cleveland in 1947. He was appointed to the newly created post of assistant law director in Euclid in 1952. In that capacity, he had the distinction of gaining a conviction of notorious racketeer Alex "Shondor" Birns - on a speeding charge.


Mechir was president of Bowden Manufacturing Corp. in Willoughby before beginning a career in banking in 1962.
