Bunn T. Phillips of Rockingham will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. Nov. 8 Veterans Day observance, Veterans Park on South Caroline Street in Rockingham.

It is a day during which many veterans organizations and others, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, lay wreaths at the memorials at the park.

A patriotic program will be presented.

Phillips, 87, retired from finance and banking, landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, on July 4, 1944, during World War II.

A rifleman with Company G, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, U.S. Army, Phillips and his unit made their way across Europe until they entered the Battle of Bulge in Belgium on Dec. 16, 1944.

As the point man for his squad at the Bulge, Phillips took machine-gun fire that cut his cartridge belt and web belt and left three holes in his field jacket. He ended up with a hip wound.

There were 19,000 Americans killed in that battle with 500,000 Americans participating in it. The battle lasted from Dec. 16 to Jan. 25, 1945.

When the war in Europe ended, Phillips was slated for duty in the Pacific when the Japanese finally surrendered.

He came hone with the Purple Heart Award with an oak leaf cluster for two battle injuries, the Combat Infantryman Badge and a Silver Star in lieu of five Bronze Service Stars.
