Atterbury- Trained 30th Division Arrives in New York From Europe
By International News Service.
NEW YORK. Aug. 23

Just back from Europe with his famous 30th (Old Hickory) Infantry Division, trained at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Maj. Gen. Leland S. Hobbs, in an interview today, spoke proudly of his fighting division.  With pride in his voice, General Hobbs said: "This division has participated in more tough fights than any division in the European theater. They have made a great record. Naturally. I'm proud of them."

General Hobbs' division, which he took to Europe and brought back home, performed brilliantly against the Germans in five campaigns from Normandy to the Russian link-up along the Elbe. They also helped crack the vaunted Siegfried line.

Smashed Siegfried Line.

Among the tougher assignments for the 30th was the smashing of the Stegfried line. the Germans' so called "impenetrable west wall." In a heavily manned sector the 30th infantrymen broke through the Siegfried line and linked up with the First Infantry Division to force the collapse of Aachen, first great German city to fall.

The 30th Division was headed for the Pacific when the war with Japan was suddenly brought to a close by the atomic bomb and the entry of Russia into the Japanese war. The men, of course. are delighted to be back home and are now spreading out in all directions to get back to their loved ones.

Gen. Hobbs is a graduate of West Point, class of 1915. which included Generals Eisenhower and Bradley. Hobbs' wife is non- living in Washington D. C. They have a home near Philadelphia.
