Fred  L. Carpenter
531st AAA Battery D
30th Infantry Division

This bit of data from a Jewish Holocaust Survivor that we liberated on 13 April 1945.  I took this group of victims back to Hillersleben.  See Canteen Cup below.  There is the ASN of Fred. L. Carpenter, Jr, 531st AAA Btry D  from Ansley, NE.   Frank Towers, 1st Lt, 120th.

My grandfather found an item on the street in Hillersleben. It was a common piece but at that time we collected everything what might be useful: "it would be good for something”.

It turned up again only long after our returning home. Then we realized that it was fully covered with etchings: places, dates, figures and the name and identity number of the owner (see below). From that time we cherished it, serving as stationery-holder on my desk since decades.

This is a good occasion to show it, as a small piece being present even probably at the Normandy disembarkation. I’d like to reassure Mr. Carpenter – hope that he still is able to accept it – that each time when I take hold of this small mess-tin in my hand it always reminds me to him and all who gave me that 65 years. This is my way to enshrine them in my mind.
