mail from Grand-daughter 1/2008:

My name is Susan (Fieder) Carico. My father was killed in World War II. I'm doing a heritage scrapbook and have been trying to find out as much info about my dad as possible. His parents( my grandparents) are both dead and they didn't talk about it much. His brother ( Joe- my uncle) who was also in the war survived but died a couple of years ago. I have a copy of several letters from my dad ( Steve) to his brother Joe while they were in the war back in 44. Also have a letter from my grandpa( Steve's dad) to his other son Joe telling Joe that his brother( Steve) was killed. It was very sad reading those letters.

I will give you some background info. My name is Susan( Fieder) Carico. I was born Jan. 5, 44. My dad's name was Steve F. Fieder. He was in the 119th infantry of the 30th infantry division, company C. His number was 356 21 221, XC-3 699133. His last letter to my mom (whom is deceased) was dated July 5, 44 and post marked July 9, 44 which I have along with his purple heart, rosary, ID bracelet from my mom with her name on one side, burial flag( flag is in a separate glass case) dog tags, & telegram stating he had been killed. I have put those items in a glass case so they are preserved. He was from Dayton, Ohio and worked at NCR before going into the army.

His birthday was 10-17-22 so he would have been 22 yrs old. My mom's name was Phyllis( Suggs) Fieder( then remarried and last name was Quinn). My aunt had info stating that he was killed in LaMauffee, France but the letter I read from grandpa stated Steve was killed in Aklion or Ortion or Arlion or Artion, France. Can't make out Grandpa's handwriting. Grandpa was from Europe and he & grandma came thru Ellis Island so they are in scrapbook also. Grandpa's name was Joe Fieder & he had a shoe repair shop in downtown Dayton named the American Shoe Repair. Steve was killed July 15,44.

I also have a picture of him ( I assume in boot camp) with writing at the bottom stating Feb. 43 COD 63rd TRBN, Camp Robinson, Arkansas. There is another with him as a cook so he must have worked in the kitchen but don't know if it was at boot camp or not. Steve was buried in France for a couple of years but don't know where then he was & then was shipped back to Dayton and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Oh. That is all I know. I would appreciate any info on him that you or anyone in the unit who might have known him. Please put my info on your message board and maybe someone might remember him. I know it has been a long time since I can see how old I am and that is how long it has been- 64 yrs this Sat. I was 6 months old when he was killed so I didn't get to know him at all.

I just visited your web site before sending this and my dad's name is on there. It reads Steve F. Fieder 119 inf. KIA # 1.  Do you know what battle he fought in or how he was killed? Did he make it off the shore of Normandy? Any information you might know would be helpful. E
