30th Infantry Division
Email from Grandson 12/12/2007 -

I am writing in response to your entry on the 30th Infantry Division website about gathering information for the roster.

My grandfather served with the 30th. He was in the 117th infantry. Unfortunately he never talked about the war much, and I never really asked. Now that he is gone I wish that I would have asked more questions.

I do not have much information other than what’s on his DD-214. I will be happy to give you what information that I have. I have been trying very hard to find out any information that I can on him.

He passed away on October 18, 2007 and I was presented with his flag. Since then I have been trying to find out what medals he had received during his service. I don’t know what unit he served in only that he was in the 117th. His army serial number was 19 140 903 and his final rank was sergeant.

He entered into active service in Oct 42 Presidio Monterey California and his separation date was Oct 45 at Seperation Center, Camp Beale California.

His military occupational specialty and number was Reconnaissance NCO 761. Battles and Campaigns were Normandy Northern France GO 33 WD 45 and Rhineland Ardennes GO 40 WD 45. He got a Purple Heart, Good Conduct medal and European African Middle Eastern campaign medal.

I hope that this information helps you. If there is any information that you have that may help me find any more info about my grandfather I would really appreciate it. Unfortunately I know that most of this info has been lost. If there is anything else I can do to help you please let me know.

Thank you, Joe Spiking
