83rd Infantry Division

Funeral Mass for George J. Calore, 89, of Wickliffe, will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 29850 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe.

Mr. Calore died Sept. 15, 2007, at Cardinal Woods Nursing & Rehab Center in Madison.

Born Aug. 13, 1918, in Cleveland, he lived in Wickliffe since 1954.  George Calore joined the U.S. Army in March 1942 and served until October 1945.
He was sent to form the 83rd Infantry Division at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, as a mess sergeant. Overseas he was active in the European Theater, earning George five battle stars for fighting the battles of Normandy, North France, Rhineland, Ardennes (the Battle of the Bulge) and Central Europe, where he received a Bronze Star. He also received five campaign medals.

After the war, he was employed by A & P Grocery Store for two years as a meat cutter. He then was a machinist for T.R.W., where he retired after 36 years.  He was a member of the T.R.W. Retirees, 83rd Infantry Division the Cleveland Chapter, American Legion Post 7 in Wickliffe, D.A.V. Post 42 in Willoughby, Little Italy's Retirees in Cleveland, Knights of Columbus 5405 in Wickliffe, Mayfield Murray Hill District Council in Cleveland, Alta House in Cleveland and was a longtime usher at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Wickliffe.

He was the beloved husband of the late Martha (Di Siena) Calore.  He was the loving father of Sandra (Tom) Weiss and George Calore Jr.; cherished grandfather of Melanie (James) Baisden, Shannon (Bob) Sampson, Thomas Weiss, Mark Weiss, Katie Calore and Jessica Calore; and great-grandfather of Jared, Noah and Gavin Baisden.  Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Orlando-Donsante Funeral Home, 29550 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
