Max Bruce Lauher 83rd Infantry Division

LETTER: Coverage of soldier's reburial was excellent Family and friends of Max Bruce Lauher greatly appreciate the professional manner in which the excellent front page story of his reburial was presented by Rob Stroud and photographer Kevin Kilhoffer. Bruce served with pride as a rifleman in the 83rd Infantry Division, part of General George Patton’s 3rd Army in battles and campaigns and of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Battle of the Bulge, with the latter being where he received permanent wounds and was awarded the Purple Heart. Bruce lived to be 82, but he was really a casualty of World War II at age 19. At the reburial in Shields Cemetery, southeast of Oakland, alongside the graves of his devoted sister, Louise, and his parents, Roy and Bertha Lauher, we were grateful that he received full military honors with participation by the Honor Guard of the Oakland VFW and the Brocton American Legion Posts and sounding of Taps by Karen Standard of Standard Funeral Home, Oakland. The spirit of kindness, helpfulness and professionalism of Karen Standard in resolving this matter, and the concern of Nick and Anne Dreistadt in initiating the action, along with the compassion of Louise Allen and everyone else involved is much appreciated.
