Obituary

Virgil Lawrence Hume, 91, of Juno Beach, Florida, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008. He was born in Lorain April 23, 1917.

He graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in Engineering in 1939. He served in WWII in 83rd Infantry Division (Engineering) in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, and central Europe. He received five medals and five bronze stars.

Mr. Hume was President of T.J. Hume Construction Company in Lorain, builder of various schools, hospitals and industrial projects.

During his lifetime, Mr. Hume served in Kiwanis, YMCA, and other charitable organizations in Ohio and Florida. He was a lifelong member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was an avid golfer and past president of Elyria Country Club.

He was married for 67 years to Jane L. (nee Rose) Hume,  a native of Niles.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, John David Hume of New Albany, Ohio, Janet Hume Smith of Calgary, Canada, and Marti Hume Ruel of Hermosa Beach, California. He is also survived by sisters, Virginia Miller of Amherst and Helen Woodward of Sheffield Lake; and six grandchildren, Alex Hume; Nathan, Nicki, Chelsea, and David Smith, and Sabra Ruel.

He was preceded in death by parents, Thomas J. and Blondina (nee Burgett) Hume; brother, Elmer T. Hume; and sisters, Geraldine Miraldi and Rita Hume.

The family will receive friends and relatives Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 3 to 5 P.M. at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
