Otto Backhaus
my grandfather Otto Backhaus, who died in November 2005, was a German POW in Camp Atterbury end of WW2.  From him I got an original copy of the "Lagerstimme".

My Grandfather did never write anything about that time. What I remember he had told me is not enough to write really much about it.

As far as I remember he was sent to Denmark, Yugoslavia, Italy and then France, where his imprisonment began. He was taken to Scotland and from there he was sent on the Queen Elizabeth I via New York to Indiana. There he had to work on farms and the race course of Indianapolis.

He always knew that his time as POW in Scotland and Indiana was much better than that of others who were taken to Russia. He always mentioned the fair treatment. I guess the worst time he had in the war was in Yugoslavia but he did not talk very much about details of that time.

In the 80's he even visited a farmer's family in Scotland he knew from that time.
