County Women Have Role in Safeguarding Atterbury Health
Personnel of the Post Surgeon's office, in marking the 170th anniversary of the Army Medical Department. recently shared with pride the tributes paid the organization for its phenomenal record of saving lives in World War II. Here at Atterbury, the Post Surgeon, Colonel Royal G. Grossman, and his staff are upholding the highest traditions of the department in medical treatment and in protecting the health of military and civilian, personnel.

While treatment at dispensaries is probably the most familiar function of the Surgeon's office. other activities are equally vital in insuring the health of post personnel. Nor does the scope of the office end at the camp boundaries.

Medical Inspection
Post Medical Inspector, Major Aaron L. Arnold, and Lt. William J. Durow, assistant inspector, in addition to keeping a close check on conditions in mess halls, theatres, service clubs, and post exchanges, also conduct inspections of restaurants and taverns in surrounding communities to Insure adherence to health standards in such places frequented by military personnel. Maj. Arnold is also Post Epidemiologist and as such, maintains statistical data on the health of the post.
Veterinary Section

One of the least known activities of the Surgeon's Office is the work of the Veterinary Section, under the direction of Maj. Vaughn E. Ishee. Post Veterinarian. Major function of this section is the inspection of all meat and dairy products served in camp. In an average month, 3,000,000 pounds of meat and dairy product are inspected not only for purity but for quality as well.

Dispensaries

The Surgeon's Office operates seven dispensaries under the direction of Maj. Murray K. Dunsmore. Chief of Dispensaries. In addition to the central dispensary No. 802 which serves Station Complement personnel, they include one for personnel of the Prisoner of War Camp, three within the PW compound, and the others at Prisoner of War sidecamps located at Austin and Windfall. Ind. In all average month these dispensaries will treat 4.500 American patients and 3..;00 prisoners of war.

Dental Section

The Dental Section, in charge of Col. Guy A. Karr. Camp Dental l Surgeon, operates the Division and. Non-Division Dental Clinics, the Post Central Dental Laboratory, and a Prisoner of War Clinic.

Lt. Col. Roy T. Marshall is t of the Non-Division Clinic who primarily serves the Personnel Center and Station Complement. Maj. Floyd- D. Howton is in charge of the Division Clinic which serves units of Wakeman Hospital Center. excepting Wakeman General Hospital and any overflow of patients from the Non-Division Clinic.

The Post Dental Laboratory is in charge of Capt. Emanuel M. Hilson.  The laboratory, staffed by skilled dental technicians. using the latest type of equipment, averages 661 prosthetic cases per month, including the construction of 368 dentures.

Sanitary Section Capt. John R. Ford, Post Sanitary Officer, assisted by Lt. Ralph Milone, Entomologist, heads the Sanitary Section.

The section recommends and employ's specific measures to prevent the spread of disease. The principal activities of this section are those concerning the insurance of a pure water supply for the camp, the sanitation of quarters and mess halls, the control of rodents and insects, and the proper disposal of refuse and sewage.

Other Sections

Another section whose work reaches past the camp boundaries is that of Maj. Boni E. Petcoff, Post Venereal Disease Control Officer. This unit maintains close liaison with civilian agencies in surrounding communities to assist in controlling and isolating sources of infection.

Assisting and advising the Post Surgeon on matters pertaining; to food is Lt. Raymond A. Russell, Post Nutrition Officer, who checks constantly to insure that rations served in post mess halls are adequate with respect to nutritional value and proper balance. Lt. John P. Du Pre as Executive Officer, assists Co Grossman in handling administrative details of the Surgeons Office.
