Maj. W. S. Arrasmith, the former Louisville architect who as Area Engineer "built" Camp Atterbury, has been transferred to a new and undisclosed assignment. He is shown above (left) saying "goodbye" to his successor, Capt. Reese Willard.
It was in February, 1942, that Maj. Arrasmith set up headquarters in a typically rural community and the first construction was begun in a cornfield in "a February snowstorm."
Maj. Arrasmith was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Reserve Corps in 1923, a 1st lieutenant in 1931 and a captain in 1935.
Capt. Willard is a native of Temple, Texas, and came here in June in charge of all outside installations, and has been here continuously with the exception of several weeks on another temporary assignment elsewhere
During World War I, Capt. Willard served from May, 1917, to May, 1919, more than a year of that time overseas. He saw service with the 6th, 7th and 26th Engineers, and held the rank of 1st lieutenant. |
