Well Hello, Joe !!!
Whadda ya know ? |
|
Yeah ? Like I haven't heard that one before! Glad you could make it. Looks like a good nite fer a dance, doncha know. Me ? I'm just standing out here coolin' my heels, waitin' on Betty Lou to show. She probably had to work a late shift at Cummins. They're all workin' overtime on that new diesel engine that goes in the DUKW. Maybe we'll get to ride one, one of these days, huh? Scoot over, here comes a bunch of new guys and gals. Hey there, new in town? Yeah, we just got in last night on the troop train from Ft. Dix. Any action around here? Are you kiddin' ? This here is Service Club #1. It's the rockinest place around. As close as yur gonna get to big city life, out here in the corn fields. A lot of stuff goes on here. Let me tell you a little bout this place, seeings as how I ain't got nothin else to do at the moment. As I said, this is Service Club #1. It's one of the biggest buildings on the Post. It's 110' by 212' long and a full two stories, jam packed full of all the comforts of home. Heck, this place is bigger than those hangars that the flyboys call home down at Atterbury and Freeman. Matter of fact, they could almost fit two of them airplane garages inside here. Me and a friend, a few weeks ago on bivouac, with nothin to do, did some figurein. You could fit one of Atterbury's C-47 cargo planes in here and have room left for over for one of them gliders, or you could fit about 10 of them AT-10s from Freeman. Course, I don't know why you'd wanta do that - it'id scratch up the dance floor, doncha know ? Been some big names pass through here. Bob Hope was here a few months ago - Yep, ol' Ski Nose, himself. He can get you rollin' in the isles. Louis Prima and his Band. They really know how to cut a rug. Vaughn Monroe, the Camel Caravan, a big USO show, you name it, it's been here ! And as if that wasn't enough, there are two more Service Clubs, 4 Post Offices, 7 Post Exchanges, 1 Field House, 5 bowling Alleys, 12 Chapels, 178 Mess Halls, and one huge Sports Arena. There's a flyer over there on the wall that lists some of the big shows that have been here, at Atterbury. Take a look at it. |

And if that's not enough, there's USO's in Edinburg, Columbus, Franklin and Indianapolis, with regular bus service to all. Hey, here comes some of those one-oh-six boys. There's John Kline, Sherod Collins and Jack Roberts. Ol' Jack looks a little down in the mug. He and his girlfriend Mary Lou, from back home, got engaged last weekend, behind PX19 of all places. I spect he's missin' her quite a bit, what with them shippin' out and all. Well, its startin' to look like I've been stood up, so we might as well go on inside. I think I just heard a nickel hit the ol' jukebox. |
