NOTICE - LOOK FOR THE 'APPROVED' SIGN

All military personnel are reminded when in Columbus, Edinburg and Franklin to eat only in those restaurants which have the red, white and blue "APPROVED' sign in their windows.  It was placed there for the health of the soldiers and is an indication that the eating place passed the sanitary inspection of the State Board of Health.

Soldier's Medals Presented to Three 83d Men Who Tried to Save Drowning Soldier

Heroism far exceeding the line of duty on the field of combat training was rewarded Wednesday in colorful Retreat ceremonies when Maj. Gen. Frank W. Milburn, commanding the 83rd Infantry Division presented the Soldier's Medal to Pfc. Robert L. Livingston, Jr. of Williamsport, Pa.; Pvt Benjamin O. Lovellette of Vincennes, Ind., and Pvt. Delphord F. Schofield of Indianapolis, all members of the 83rd Reconnaissance Troop, for their valiant attempt to rescue Pvt. Lester W. Cochran of Lebanon, Ky., from drowning in swollen Nineveh Creek during routine field operations March 19.

All three men, in utter disregard for their own personal safety, and fully clothed, jumped into the icy, swift-running stream and swam to Cochran, only to have their efforts nullified by the swift current and the struggles of the drowning man.  All were assisted to shore at the point of exhaustion.

The presentation, first of its kind at Camp Atterbury, was the occasion for a combat team review by Gen. Milburn of the 329th Infantry, 908th Field Artillery, 308th Engineers and 83rd Reconnaissance Troop/

The Soldier's Medal is the only one which can be won for extraordinary bravery outside of combat zones.
