from our exercise at Fort Hood, TX. (Bob passed away from a heart
attack about 3 weeks ago- 2003) |

We had two very capable mess
leaders in Captain Ed Wright from Toledo,Oh and M/Sgt Walter Manka
form Hammond, Ill. Kitchen tables and floors were scrubbed three
times a day. No KPs were allowed in the kitchen area. For nine
months straight, Food Service awarded us with The Best Mess of the
month. The Captain had officers from Camp Headquarters frequently
attending our mess. |

Food Service Student Inspection
Food Service school at Camp
Atterbury. This was an Army-Air force school. When I attended
there was a group from Colorado attending. It was a three month
course. This was taken in summer of 1951.
Cooks worked one day on and one day off. Usually from noon to
noon and off from noon to noon with every other weekend off.
Every day at Food Service, student cook inspections were held.
Cook of the day had the honor of serving the officers. I made
it a number of times and at last it got to be a pain
