39th Evacuation Hospital Unit History

The 39th Evacuation Hospital, Semi-mobile, was constituted in July 1923 and ordered to active duty on 30 August 1942. It trained at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, from 8 August 1942 until 7 June 1943 and participated in the Tennessee Maneuvers.  

In February of 1944 the 39th Evacuation Hospital was sent to England aboard the troop ship H.M.S. Andes and assigned to VIII Corps. During the Normandy invasion the 39th was first assigned to the 1st Army, and then transferred to the 3rd Army of General George Patton. 

During its period of service in the European Theater of Operations the 39th Evacuation Hospital participated in 5 campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. The 39th Evacuation Hospital was awarded 5 campaign stars and awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation.  

For their services in the ETO 8 officers, 8 nurses, and 12 enlisted personnel received the Bronze Star. Three nurses and 1 enlisted man received the Legion of Merit. One Purple Heart was also awarded.

The 39th Evacuation Hospital, Semi-mobile, was deactivated at Camp Myles Standish, MA on 14 November 1945.
