Chaplain Training April 09, 1942

Roman Catholic Chaplains kneel at prayer in the Church.  A year ago there were 923 Army Chaplains for the Army of 3,600,000 men by Jan. 1 provided by Congressional appropriations.  The setup is for 3,500 Chaplains, and they are being commissioned at a rate of 150 a month.

Training school opened for Army Chaplains.  Indianapolis, Ind.  A new Army school for Chaplain candidates has been opened at Fort Benjamin Harrison here, where the Chaplains receive four weeks' training before assignment to a Regiment or to a Post.  A canidate must be a citizen actively engaged in the ministry as his principal vocation in life with at least three years of practical experience therein.  He must be between the ages of 24 and 45.  Must be ecclesiastically indorsed by his Church official or committee.  The Chaplain enters the service as a First Lieutenant with a salary of $167.67 a month plus $1.20 a day for food and $40 or $60 a month (depending upon whether he is married) for lodging.  This compares well, it was said, with the incomes of young ministers in parishes of moderate affluence.
