General William Wallace Atterbury and Camp Atterbury, Indiana

'the Railroad General'

 

William Wallace Atterbury - A citizen called to aid his country at the start of WW1.  His vast experiences with railroading in America was put to good work with the military railroad system in France.  His fame was such, that before he arrived, the other generals worried about how to address him.  His accomplishments earned him the title of "Attaboy" in honor of always getting the job done.  Later, during WW2, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, the baseball teams were called the "Attaboys".

Two WW2 military bases in Indiana were named after him, namely
Atterbury Army Air Field, Columbus, Indiana
and
Camp Atterbury, Edinburgh, Indiana

In addition to these honors, a U. S. Army camp in Iran was named Camp Atterbury, and a railroad line was the "Atterbury Special".  In Indiana the train that carried soldiers from Camp Atterbury to Indianapolis for weekend passes was also the "Atterbury Special".
