August 13, 2004 - Jones to Present the Bronze Star and Purple Heart to family of local World War II veteran

Walter Jones will present the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medal to the family of Mr. Lois Cherry, Corporal in the United States Army. The ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. on August 14 at the Cherry Oaks Recreations Center located within the Cherry Oaks subdivision in Greenville, North Carolina.

“Corporal Cherry sacrificed his life to ensure that all of our freedoms remain secure – for that we are truly grateful for his courage and commitment to this country.”

Corporal Cherry enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1943 and was assigned to the 106th Infantry Division 589th Field Artillery Battalion. Mr. Cherry was embattled at the Battle of the Bulge on December 16, 1944 and was reported missing on January 16, 1945. Corporal Cherry later died in a German prisoner of War Camp located near Stuttgard, Germany.

Mr. Cherry’s brother, along with other family members, will be in attendance for the ceremony and he will be presented with an American flag in honor of his brother’s service to God and country.
