April 19, 1946 - Nazi soldiers captured after fleeing CAMP ATTERBURY. US Army Sgt and an Indianapolis civilian arrested by FBI, accused of aiding the third escape of two German POWs Paul Schneider ,27 and Heinz Bialas, 25 from CAMP ATTERBURY. Bialas had been a member of Hitler's Afrika Korps and a prisoner for three years. The Army Sgt picked up the POWs at their Mess Hall in a car stolen from a CAMP ATTERBURY officer. It was the third time they had escaped for weekend and overnight visits with Indianapolis friends. The POWs were also charged with illegally wearing US Army uniforms. |

May 1, 1946 - 100 buildings at Freeman Field declared surplus and available for Federal Public Housing Authority for Veteran Housing. Buildings to be removed. May 9, 1946 - Captured enemy aircraft relocated from Freeman Field to Chicago-Park Ridge. Twenty by rail and forty-seven by flight. Fifteen captured enemy aircraft transferred from Freeman Field to Douglas Aircraft Plant, Chicago, Illinois. -- CAMP ATTERBURY Personnel Center To Close. Inductions and Discharges To Cease July 31.
