April 4, 1949 - The (NATO) North Atlantic Treaty Organization pact was signed by the US, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Canada. It provided for mutual defense against aggression and for close military cooperation

April 13, 1949 - Atterbury AFB is being considered as a maintenance and repair facility for the Tenth Air Force.

May 12, 1949 - Berlin Blockage lifted.

May 23, 1949 - The Federal Republic of (West) Germany officially came into existence with Bonn as the capital.

June 14, 1949 - The State of Vietnam was formed.

July 1, 1949 - 434th Troop Carrier Wind (Medium-Reserve) activated with station at Atterbury AFB, per General Order #49.

July 8, 1949 - Vietta M. Bates became the first enlisted woman sworn into the U.S. Army when legislation was passed making the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps part of the regular Army

July 11, 1949 - Nine C-47's of the 434th TCW become first Air Reserve unit to drop  Regular Army paratroopers at Camp Campbell, Ky.

Aug 29, 1949 - The USSR successfully detonated its first atomic bomb, Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan, codenamed "First Lightning."

Sept 21, 1949 - The Communist People's Republic of China was proclaimed under Mao Tse Tung with Chou En-Lai as Premier.

Sept 30, 1949 - The Berlin airlift ended its operation after 277,264 flights. Through accidents 31 Americans lost their lives in support of the airlift. The Berlin Airlift, which began on June 26, 1948, and lasted 321 days, consisted of 272,264 flights by British and American airmen. They transported some 2.3 million tons of food to supply the 2.1 million residents of the blockaded portion of the city. The operation ended after 278,288 flights and delivery of 2,326,406 tons of supplies.

Oct 1, 1949 - Republic of China (Taiwan) was formed on island of Formosa.

Oct 6, 1949 - American-born Iva Toguri D'Aquino, convicted of being Japanese wartime broadcaster Tokyo Rose, was sentenced in San Francisco to 10 years in prison and fined $10,000.

Oct 20, 1949 - Hollywood filmmakers invade Atterbury AFB to film scenes for a movie promoting reserve training and Air Force recruiting.

Oct 26, 1949 - President Truman signed a measure raising the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour. Home-delivered milk was 42 cents per half gallon.

Dec, 1949 - Fire Dept at Atterbury AFB is authorized 37 military and 4 civilians.
