Jan 11, 1954 - 11,000 watch final parade of the 31st Division.  Pilot bails out of P-51 over CAMP ATTERBURY.

Jan 14, 1954 - Joe DiMaggio married Marilyn Monroe.

Jan 15, 1954 - First 31st Division troop train leaves CAMP ATTERBURY for Camp Carson, Colorado.  2nd train in few days.  8 trains in total.

Jan 21, 1954 - The first atomic submarine, the USS Nautilus, was launched at Groton, Conn.

Jan 22.1954 - CAMP ATTERBURY in the running for USAF Academy.

Jan 26, 1954, Department of the Army General Order No 4, dated 01/26/1954, deactivates CAMP ATTERBURY effective 31 March 1954..  Surplus equipment sent to Fort Benjamin Harrison and other Army facilities.

Jan 28, 1954 - General Kean visits CAMP ATTERBURY to close the camp.

Feb 1954 - Maj. Gen Harry J. Collins leaves and Col. Joseph B. Daughtery assumes command of CAMP ATTERBURY

5 Feb 1954 - 31st Division departs CAMP ATTERBURY enroute to Camp Carson, CO.  CAMP ATTERBURY's CARDINAL newspaper ceases publications.

Feb 6, 1954 - Indiana State seeks to use warehouse space at CAMP ATTERBURY.

Feb 17, 1954 - Britain announced its ability to make hydrogen bombs.

Feb 18, 1954 - Stripping of CAMP ATTERBURY's hospital is fought.  Indiana Governor Craig in fight to save hospital.

March 31, 1954 - CAMP ATTERBURY placed in inactive status by General Order No. 4.  Last meal served.  Remaining personnel fed by 5015th Mess after that date.

April, 1954 - Military Department of Indiana again receives permit to use sections of CAMP ATTERBURY.  USAR Center is established.

April 1, 1954 - U.S. Air Force Academy was founded in Colorado. President Dwight Eisenhower signed a bill authorizing the establishment of an Air Force Academy, similar to West Point and Annapolis. On July 11, 1955, the first class was sworn in at Lowry Air Force Base. The academy moved to a permanent site near Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1958.

May 7, 1954 - The Battle of Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam ended after 55 days with Vietnamese insurgents overrunning French forces and the US began to get involved.

May 11, 1954 - CAMP ATTERBURY off of USAF Academy list.

June 14, 1954 - President Eisenhower signed an order adding the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance.

July 5, 1954 - Elvis Presley's first commercial recording session took place at Sun Records in Memphis, Tenn.; the song he recorded was "That's All Right (Mama)."

Oct 11, 1954 - Atterbury Air Force Base renamed Bakalar Air Force Base.

Oct 21, 1954 - Indiana State not to lease CAMP ATTERBURY hospital.
