Jan-Aug, 1960 - 160,000 refugees crossed from East Germany to West Germany following food shortages. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev ordered a wall 103 miles long and 12 feet high to be built with guards and barbed wire to stop the flow of refugees. |

May 1, 1960 Gary Francis Powers was shot down by the Soviets over Sverdlovsk in the Ural Mountains. Forced to bail out at 15,000 feet, he survived the parachute jump but was promptly arrested by Soviet authorities. May 11, 1960 - Israeli soldiers captured Adolph Eichmann in Buenos Aires. Adolph Eichmann, the Nazi war criminal, was nabbed in Argentina by Peter Malkin. Eichmann was taken to Israel where he was tried, found guilty and hung in 1962. |

July 4, 1960 - The 50-star flag made its debut in Philadelphia. A 50th star was added to the American flag in honor of Hawaii's admission into the Union on August 21, 1959. |
