April 5, 1964 - Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur died in Washington, D.C., at age 84. William Manchester wrote his biography: "American Caesar: Douglas MacArthur."

Aug 2, 1964 - The Pentagon reported the first of two attacks on U.S. destroyers by North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. U.S. destroyer Maddoxis was reportedly attacked by North Vietnamese patrol boats.

Aug 7, 1964 - Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, giving President Johnson broad powers in dealing with reported North Vietnamese attacks on U.S. forces. It allowed the president to use unlimited military force to prevent attacks on U.S. forces.
