Jan 6, 1983 - Col Brown leaves and Col Arthur L. Goldman assumes command of CAMP ATTERBURY

Feb 24, 1983 - A congressional commission, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, released a report condemning the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II as a "grave injustice."

March 23, 1983 - President Reagan first proposed development of technology to intercept enemy missiles -- a proposal that came to be known as the Strategic Defense Initiative, as well as "Star Wars."

April 18, 1983 - At the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, 62 people, including 17 Americans, were killed by a suicide bomber.

April 30, 1983 - William "Carl" Kassen, former executive officer at CAMP ATTERBURY, post executive officer and deputy post commander at Fort Harrison dies.

May 27, 1983 - Students at Custer Baker Middle School, Franklin, have a hit with new book, "Atterbury File."

July 13, 1983 - Air Force Reserve pilot killed in crash of plane during training mission.

July 26, 1983 - PFC Donald L. Sherwood, shot in face with flare - dies. Bartholomew County grand jury to investigate.  Ohio National Guard removes soldier before Indiana officials can charge him in connection with flare-firing incident.  Grand Jury investigation of "war games" injury ordered.

Sept 30, 1983 - The first AH-64 Apache attack helicopter was rolled out by McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co.

Oct 23, 1983 - Beirut, Lebanon: Shiite suicide bombers exploded truck near U.S. military barracks at Beirut airport, killing 241 Marines. Minutes later a second bomb killed 58 French paratroopers in their barracks in West Beirut.

Oct 25, 1983 - 1,800 U.S. Marines and Rangers, assisted by 300 soldiers from six Caribbean nations, invaded Grenada at the order of President Reagan, who said the action was needed to protect U.S. citizens there. Protection for the American students at St. George's Medical School was a pretext for the invasion. Forty-five Grenadians were killed along with 29 Cubans and 18 [19] Americans.
