Jan 6, 2000 - The US Army replaced the Young & Rubicom ad agency after a 1999 recruit shortfall of 6,290. Rubicom held the contract for 12 years and crafted the slogan: "Be all that you can be."

Jan 26, 2000 - The UN appointed Hans Blix of Sweden to be the new weapons inspector for Iraq.

Jan 31, 2000 - The US persuaded Puerto Rico to continue use of the Navy firing range off Vieques Island with dummy bombs in exchange for $40 million. A vote by islanders to approve live ammunition would bring Puerto Rico an additional $50 million. A no vote would require clean up and a halt to training by May 1, 2003.

Feb 3, 2000 - The US Navy in the Straits of Hormuz took control of a Russian tanker, Volgoneft-147, on suspicion that is was smuggling oil from Iraq in violation of US sanctions. Tests showed the oil came from Iraq and it was forced to discharge the oil in Oman.

Feb 26, 2000 - From the United Arab Emirates it was reported that hunters killed the last known Arabian mountain goat, known as tahr, to restore their sexual potency. The last known Arabian wolf was also killed in the mountains of Ras al-Khaimah by shepherds who feared for their flocks.

March 17, 2000 - Old East German Stasi files revealed that radioactive material was used to mark opponents, their papers and money. East German dissident writer Rudolf Bahro, who died of Leukemia, may have been a victim.

March 21, 2000 - Holland announced that it would give the Jewish community $180 million for injustices suffered after returning from Nazi death camps. Another $114 million was set for Dutch victims of Japanese WW II prison camps in Indonesia and $14 million for Dutch Gypsies persecuted by the Nazis.

March 23, 2000 - Germany completed a $5 billion agreement on how to allocate funds among surviving forced laborers and other workers in Hitler's concentration camps.

April 22, 2000 - In Miami US INS agents stormed the home of Lazaro Gonzalez and took away Elian Gonzalez to Washington, where he was united with his father. Riots erupted in Little Havana and 290 protesters were arrested.

May, 2000 - Largest rail deployment since Korean War leaves CAMP ATTERBURY.  120 railcars loaded with 450 military vehicles sent to Fort Polk, Louisiana in conjunction with Indiana National Guard's 76th Separate Infantry Brigade training.

May 1, 2000 - A US State Dept. annual report on efforts to combat terrorism listed Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria as state sponsors for terrorism. The report indicated a shift from the Middle East to South Asia with Afghanistan and Pakistan listed as threatening.

Aug 12, 2000 - A Russian nuclear submarine, the Kurst, became trapped on the floor of the Barents Sea during naval exercises. 118 sailors were trapped in the Oscar-II class submarine that was thought to have suffered a torpedo-room explosion.

Aug 25, 2000 - German intelligence confirmed that it had discovered a secret Iraqi missile factory near Baghdad. Some 250 technicians were reported working on ARABIL-100 short-range missiles.

Sept 9, 2000 - Louisville & Indiana Railroad is coping with the dramatic decrease in car loadings following last year’s sale of Conrail by focusing on expanding local traffic. Included are more than 200 carloads of military equipment that moved in late May and returned in late June using L&I’s new connection serving Camp Atterbury. “This was the first major exercise from Camp Atterbury since the Korean War,” notes Darren Wagner, L&I’s director of .marketing.

Oct 8, 2000 - It was reported that Austria had agreed to pay $400 million to slave and forced laborers sent there by Hitler during WW II.

Oct 12, 2000 - A US Navy destroyer, the USS Cole, refueling in Yemen suffered an enormous explosion in what appeared to be a terrorist attack. At least 6 sailors were killed with 11 missing. The death toll was revised to 17. The 8,600-ton Cole was returned to the US aboard the Norwegian ship Blue Marlin.

Nov 15, 2000 - In Florida Katherine Harris, the Republican Sec. of State, turned down requests by 4 counties to extend the time limit for counting ballots.

Nov 22, 2000 - Gov. George Bush called on the US Supreme Court to stop the vote counting in Florida. In Palm Beach Circuit Court Judge Jorge Labarga ordered election officials to consider dimpled ballots. In Dade County election officials called off the recount due to their inability to meet the Nov 27 deadline

Dec 4, 2000 - In Florida Judge Sauls denied Al Gore's request for a recount. The US Supreme Court set aside the decision by the Florida Supreme Court to extend the vote counting deadline and sent the case back to the Florida court.

Dec 12, 2000 - The US Supreme Court decided 5-4 to block all ballot recounts and effectively secured the presidency for Gov. George W. Bush.

Dec 20, 2000 - General William Wallace Atterbury's private business rail coach arrives at CAMP ATTERBURY and located next to museum.  In Afghanistan the Taliban ordered UN offices closed and pledged to boycott peace talks. New sanctions were imposed in response to the Taliban's refusal to surrender Osama bin Laden.

Dec 21, 2000 - Final US election results showed Al Gore with 50,996,116 votes vs. Gov. Bush with 50,456,169. Gore led by over 500,000 votes but lost to bush by one electoral college vote.
