Martin Douglas 117th Regiment, Company L 30th Infantry Division |
email from son, 3/08/2002 He was in the 117th Inf. Reg. Co. L He was National Guard several years before they became regular army. His Guard unit was out of Dyersburg (Dyer County TN) He was a drill Sgt. at Ft. Jackson . He was a hand to hand combat instructor at Ft. Benning before the war. He was discharged out of Camp Atterbury, but they had moved him and others into an armored unit at the end of the war. They were then discharged. From what I understand from my dad, he was to be sent home ahead of the rest of his outfit because of his points. Yet because of storms he was unable to fly home and had to be shipped. He did not return with the others on the Queen Mary. He actually got back after they had returned. They broke up the 30th after the war and he ended up in an armored unit. |
