106th Medical Battalion

Maroon and white are the standard colors of the 106th Medical Battalion.  The magnolia flower, emblem of Mississippi, shows the unit's affiliation with the Mississippi National Guard.  The cross within the shied typifies the humanitarian efforts of this organization and its conformity with Red Cross policies set forth at the Geneva Convention.  The battalion's motto is "Service Supreme".

106th Medical Battalion.  For outstanding devotion to duty in the performance of exceptionally difficult tasks at Oro Bay and Aitape, British New Guinea, and on Morotai Island, Netherlands East Indies, from 03/21/1944 to 01/31/1945.  This battalion, an organic unit of a combat infantry division, was charged, during the days of acclimatization of the division at a base camp, with second echelon evacuation and hospitalization of less serious cases and those not requiring long time treatment and convalescence, actually operating a complete hospital in order that all personnel might gain the maximum of experience.  During the tactical operations of the division superior support was given under trying circumstances to the various units. From 0915/1944 to 10/04/194, the battalion evacuated, received and treated all casualties of the Morotai operation. During the period from 09/15/1944 to 01/31/1945, 3,173 patients were admitted to the clearing station. In the performance of its assigned duties under especially difficult conditions this unit maintained an exceptionally high standard of efficiency and discipline and displayed an unusually devotion to duty.
