Jim Tegarden, Col, USAF Retired
Freeman AAF, Class 44 K

I was there from November 1944 (arrived Thanksgiving Day as I recall) until February 1, 1945. I graduated with Class 44-K , the last Aviation Cadet Class to receive wings at Freeman.

Perhaps of some interest, born in Mitchell in 1925, I grew up in Orleans about 50 miles west of Seymour. I graduated from Orleans HS in 1943, returned there after the war, married a local girl and was active as a partner in a grocery business until returning to the Air Force in 1952. I retired with the rank of Colonel in 1974, moved to Las Vegas in 1977 and have been here ever since. My Orleans wife, Joanne, and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary last May.

Completing Basic Flying Training at Bainbridge, Georgia, I was on the single engine assignment list but without a base assignment when a notice went up on the Bulletin Board that 50 cadet (really Aviation Student as we were called then) volunteers were needed to switch to twin engine training at Freeman Field. That being only 50 miles from home, the temptation was overwhelming, so I quickly became a volunteer. Shortly after arrival at Freeman, in my initial meeting and interview with the Director for Training & Operations, Major Fuller, I was given friendly notice that I would be suspect should any buzzing be reported around Orleans. I did make several flights over and around the town but the only time I got low was when I managed to get a little off course on a low level cross country training mission.

Class 44-K, which should have graduated in December 1944, did not graduate until February 1945. The flying schools were turning out a surplus of pilots near the end of the war. It was our understanding that all classes in training (at least in the Eastern Flying Training Command) were slipped for one training period of 5 weeks. We were at Bainbridge at the time, so received 15 weeks of basic flying instead of the scheduled 10 weeks. That gave us an additional 30 hours of flying time at graduation.

On or about July 6, 1943, I boarded a B&O train at Mitchell for Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio to report for active duty with the Army. We stopped at Seymour and a lad with the last name Schneck boarded with the same destination as mine. I lost track of him over the next several months but think he completed pilot training about the time I did. He was probably a Seymour High School Class 1943 graduate.

Another vivid memory I have of Seymour and Freeman Field is related to Christmas 1944. My Father was a Chief Petty Officer in the Seabees stationed at Hingham, Mass. My Mother was with him, working in a munitions plant nearby. A few days before Christmas, probably December 23rd, I got on a B&O train at Seymour headed for Mitchell to spend the holidays with relatives in Orleans. As with all trains during the war years, every seat and most of the comfortable standing room was taken. I had walked through six or seven cars looking for a place to drop my small hand bag when I came across Mother and Dad on their way to Orleans for Christmas.
