March 15, 1980 - Thomas "Sarge" Johnson, internationally known boxing coach of CAMP ATTERBURY Job Corps Center, dies with his team of American Amateur boxers in a plane crash in Poland.

March 21, 1980 - President Carter announced to the U.S. Olympic Team that they would not participate in the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow as a boycott against Soviet intervention in Afghanistan.

March 31, 1980 - President Carter deregulated the banking industry.

April 6, 1980 - Post-It Notes were introduced.

April 24, 1980 - An American assault team held 44 Iranians hostage for about 3 hours when their bus stumbled upon the remote desert site. The failed operation was commanded by Colonel Charles Beckwith, the founder of US Delta Force. The mission resulted in the deaths of eight U.S. servicemen. A U.S. hostage rescue failed when a plane collided with a helicopter in Iran.

May 8, 1980 - The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that smallpox had been eradicated.

May 18, 1980 - At 8:32 a.m. Mount Saint Helens, in Washington, erupted. It burst 3 times in 24 hours after rumbling for two months and left 57 people dead or missing. The mountain lost over 1,300 feet of elevation and gained a two-mile-long and one mile-wide crater on its summit.

May 24, 1980 - Iran rejected a call by the World Court in The Hague to release the American hostages.

June 23, 1980 - Super Constellation crashes on take-off from Columbus Municipal Airport (former Atterbury AAF/Bakalar AFB).

June 27, 1980 - President Jimmy Carter reinstated draft registration for males 18 years of age.

July 17, 1980 - A second former Guard technician files suit to be reinstated. Claims he was fired for informing public of alleged misuse of federal government equipment and employees at CAMP ATTERBURY.
